A soldier is never off duty in this touching drama set during the Christmas season. On leave from Iraq, Army Specialist Dale (Ethan Hawke) has spent the last six months putting his life back together after the death of his wife and daughter. He's enjoying peace and quiet on a snowy Christmas Eve when an offer to help out at a homeless shelter during the holidays lands in his lap. Dale is faced with many challenges while volunteering, but he's surprised by how much he enjoys helping others again. Now, back home on leave for two weeks of downtime before heading out again to Iraq, Dale struggles to re-connect with loved ones and come to terms with what he did over there before it's too late. The film's financial and critical success was mostly due to Hawke, who had a personal connection with the story and its themes: his wife of nine years, Uma Thurman, had died in 2004.
